Here are a few examples of secondary sources on Mao Zedong and the People's Republic of China. They include an article and a book, though you may find that a chapter or two of the book prove to be particularly interesting. 

Dong, Z. (2014). Mao Zedong and the independent and comprehensive industrial system and the modernization of New China. World Review of Political Economy, 5(4), 472–487. 

This article discusses Mao's rule through an economic lens. The author discusses Mao's policies and actions that propelled China forward industrially, setting up a new, independent economy in just a few decades.

Boon, H. T. (2018). China's global identity: Considering the responsibilities of great power. Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press.

This book, and in particular Chapter 1: The origins of China's great power identity (pages 1-28), considers the origins of China's modern identity, and investigates how China's history has influenced that identity. Remember: you don't have to use the entire book.
