Using Shapiro Library Content in the LMS

This guide is for SNHU instructional designers, course developers, deans, faculty and staff that want to use library resources in the LMS and to ensure best practices are followed.

Video Databases

The databases that we have which contain videos are high cost resources. In our opinion the life span of a video is shorter than a book or article as well.

Alexander Street Press: Academic Video Online

Description: Subscribed, unlimited. Titles reviewed and removed by the vendor twice a year in January and July, the library is notified of these changes.

Recommendation: Use the videos and if the title gets pulled librarians can help look for replacements.

Yellow Caution Sign Some risk: There is some risk to using these videos in the LMS, as the vendor or publisher can pull these from the database.

Films on Demand

Description: Subscribed, unlimited. Titles reviewed and removed by the vendor twice a year in June and December, the library can check the admin dashboard at these times to see the list.

Recommendation: Use the videos and if the title gets pulled librarians can help look for replacements.

Yellow Caution Sign Some risk: There is some risk to using these videos in the LMS, as the vendor or publisher can pull these from the database.

Feature Films for Education

Description: Subscribed, unlimited. Titles are added to the collection twice a year and pulled once a year. We will be notified of removed titles.

Recommendation: Use the videos and if the title gets pulled librarians can help look for replacements.

Yellow Caution Sign Some risk: There is some risk to using these videos in the LMS, as the vendor or publisher can pull these from the database.

Kanopy

Description: PDA, unlimited. Individual licenses may be purchased for 3 years, at $350 per title.

Recommendation: Explore other video databases and confirm that the video you wish to use here is the best. Fill out the Verify License Request form to have the library purchase the license.

Yellow Caution Sign Some risk: Due to the expense of the licensing for these videos, make sure that SNHU is spending money wisely on content that is important for learners. Please have your eLearning Librarian secure the license, otherwise we cannot guarantee that this will be available for users.

Safari Tech Books Online (video content)

Description: Subscribed, unlimited. Titles removed by the vendor at anytime and the library is not notified. Not all videos include closed captions and the vendor does not provide CC easily.

Recommendation: We do not currently recommend that the Safari videos be used in the LMS at this time. If a video does get used, please have a back up option identified in case the resource gets removed.

Red X Icon High risk: Videos can be pulled at any time by the vendor without notification and they are not able to provide closed captioning easily.

Sage Video

Description: Owned, unlimited. Sage creates and hosts their own content.

Recommendation: Use this content often!

Green Check No risk

Swank Digital Campus

Description: Subscribed, unlimited. Licenses may be secured for individual titles to ensure access for the year. Content can sometimes not have captions so we need to request these as needed.

Recommendation: Contact your eLearning Librarian to secure licensing for individual videos, by filling out the Verify License Request form to have the library purchase the license.
