Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Media Literacy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy

AI literacy means understanding how artificial intelligence works, recognizing its limitations, and knowing how to use it responsibly. AI tools generate responses based on patterns in their training data, but they do not have independent thought, reasoning, or real-world awareness. This means that AI can produce useful information, but it can also generate errors, bias, or misleading content.

An AI-literate user will:

  • Know when and how to use AI tools effectively
  • Question their outputs
  • Apply critical thinking to ensure accuracy and ethical use

AI literacy has quickly become an essential skill in both academic and professional settings. In an academic setting, you will encounter AI in research, writing, and studying, and knowing how to evaluate AI-generated content will help you prevent misinformation and academic dishonesty. In the workplace, AI is used for data analysis, content creation, and automation, and employees who understand its strengths and weaknesses can use it more effectively while avoiding pitfalls like bias or overreliance.

By developing AI literacy, you will gain the ability to navigate an increasingly AI-driven world with confidence, because you will know how to use AI tools to enhance, not replace, your own critical thinking and decision-making skills.
