Online MFA in Creative Writing

This guide is intended to help you identify and locate scholarly and non-scholarly resources (books, articles, etc.) for the Online MFA in Creative Writing program.

Reading as a Writer

“For all I know, writing comes out of a superior devotion to reading.” -- Eudora Welty

Stories have the power to make us laugh, cry, think, and feel. They can empower us, infuriate us, and stay with us long after we finish them. As writers, we can take great inspiration from the stories we read.

MFA students in SNHU’s online program study craft techniques in published stories and a range of classic, contemporary, and diverse novels. For further reading for study or pleasure, please explore our eBook collections, available short stories, and literary journals like Ploughshares This link opens in a new window or SNHU’s own Penmen Review This link opens in a new window. Or, check out our Book Review section, which includes notable journals like Anil Aggrawal’s Internet Journal of Book Reviews This link opens in a new window and the Kirkus Review This link opens in a new window, as well as links to websites like Goodreads This link opens in a new window, NPR Book Reviews This link opens in a new window, and Read Diverse Books This link opens in a new window.

Reading might be a solitary endeavor, but discussing it doesn’t have to be. If you’d like to chat about good things you’ve read, head on over to the Writer’s Community This link opens in a new window
