Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing
Evidence-based practice or EBP, is a process "which involves defining a clinical situation of interest, formatting a good clinical question, conducting a literature search (i.e. finding the evidence), reading and critiquing research findings or published research reports (or both) and deciding if the 'evidence' warrants a change in practice" (Godshall, 2015, p.xii).
Understanding how to find credible research that provides evidence pertaining to the clinical situation is vital. Click on the electronic books and articles below if you'd like to read and learn more.

- Agile Implementation by Malaz Boustani; José Azar; Craig A. SolidCall Number: Available OnlineISBN: 9781642796599Publication Date: 2020Agile Implementation describes the underlying theories and frameworks that explain health delivery systems and lays out the 8 steps of the Agile Implementation Model founded by Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH and Jose Azar, MD. In today's complex healthcare environment, implementing evidence-based care into real-world practices is difficult and time consuming. Even methods that are known to be effective allow for limited flexibility and therefore fail as often as they succeed. Through much study and experimentation, Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, Jose Azar, MD, and Craig A. Solid, PhD have come to understand how individuals' interactions within the complex social systems of hospitals, clinics, and other care delivery organizations shape the decisions and behaviors of those involved. Upon this foundation and through leveraging theories of behavioral economics, we have developed the Agile Implementation Model, a process for selecting, adapting, implementing, evaluating, sustaining, and scaling evidence-based healthcare interventions. This model acknowledges the uniqueness of each individual facility and considers individuals within the system to be semiautonomous but interconnected. In tandem with illustrative examples, Agile Implementation describes the underlying theories and frameworks that explain health delivery systems and lays out the 8 steps of the Agile Implementation Model. Upon completing Agile Implementation, readers have a better understanding of why certain quality initiatives succeed while others fail and have tangible, actionable tools for implementing effective and sustainable change in the healthcare setting.
- Making Sense of Evidence-Based Practice for Nursing by Debra EvansCall Number: Available OnlineISBN: 9780367740849Publication Date: 2022This straightforward guide to evidence-based practice helps you to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to challenge practice that is not underpinned by research and to increase your understanding of the processes involved in accessing, appraising, and synthesizing good quality research. Providing a basic introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research, Debra Evans explores how to find out "what works best", the impact of something, and what requires more research. Readers will also learn the basic rules used in study design and statistics presented in research articles and systematic reviews. Each simply written chapter includes relevant theory, diagrams and tables, case studies, exercises, boxed summaries, and further reading. Packed with examples from practice across the nursing fields and at different levels, this book is essential for nurses - both student and qualified - who want to increase their confidence when it comes to research appraisal and evidence-based practice processes.
- The PEACE Model for Evidence-Based Practice for Clinical Nurses by Reynaldo R. Rivera; Joyce J. FitzpatrickCall Number: Available OnlineISBN: 9781646480029Publication Date: 2021NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the nation's most comprehensive academic healthcare delivery systems, uses the evidence-based practice PEACE model to prepare all its nurses and position them as essential to improving patient and family-centered care. Not surprisingly, the health- care network has continuously delivered high quality care and improved patient outcomes. Now, nurses everywhere can replicate this highly successful model. In The PEACE Model Evidence-Based Practice Guide for Clinical Nurses, authors Reynaldo R. Rivera and Joyce J. Fitzpatrick provide a road map to model implementation. Readers will learn to formulate and address clinical questions and disseminate findings, ultimately helping nurses integrate evidence at the bedside and through quality research.
- Article: The Value of Library and Information Services in Nursing and Patient CareLibraries are a primary resource for evidence-based practice. This study, using a critical incident survey administered to 6,788 nurses at 118 hospitals, sought to explore the influence of nurses’ use of library resources on both nursing and patient outcomes. In this article, the authors describe the background events motivating this study, the survey methods used, and the study results.
- Article: The Impact of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing and The Next Big IdeasThe impact of evidence-based practice (EBP) has echoed across nursing practice, education, and science. The call for evidence-based quality improvement and healthcare transformation underscores the need for redesigning care that is effective, safe, and efficient. In line with multiple direction-setting recommendations from national experts, nurses have responded to launch initiatives that maximize the valuable contributions that nurses have made, can make, and will make, to fully deliver on the promise of EBP. Such initiatives include practice adoption; education and curricular realignment; model and theory development; scientific engagement in the new fields of research; and development of a national research network to study improvement.
