Background Information
A selected list of databases and online resources can be found below to help guide you in your search for evidence-based material and peer-reviewed articles. In addition, you will find several resources for gathering current health data. These databases can be a valuable resource as you move forward in the MSN-FNP program.
Selected Nursing Databases
- CINAHL Complete - EBSCO This link opens in a new windowMost comprehensive nursing and allied health database. CINAHL covers nursing, biomedicine, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.
- Cochrane - EBSCO This link opens in a new windowAn essential source of high quality health care data for providers, patients, administrators, and educators. Includes the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Cochrane Methodology Register.
- DynaMed - EBSCO This link opens in a new windowDynaMed is a clinical reference tool of more than 3000 topics designed for physicians and health care professionals for use primarily at the point-of-care. DynaMed is updated daily and monitors the content of over 500 medical journal and systemic evidence review databases.
- Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition - EBSCO This link opens in a new windowProvides scholarly, full-text journals focusing on many medical disciplines and abstracts and indexing for over 550 journals
- Nursing Journals on Ovid This link opens in a new windowA collection of full-text journals in nursing, including "American Journal of Nursing" (AJN)
- UpToDate This link opens in a new windowUpToDate is an evidence-based, peer-reviewed clinical decision support resource that assists with point-of-care decisions on patient care, diagnosis, and treatment. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
AHRQ is the lead federal agency charged with improving the safety and quality of healthcare for all Americans. AHRQ develops the knowledge, tools, and data needed to improve the healthcare system and help consumers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers make informed health decisions
Dartmouth Atlas of Healthcare
Based at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, the Dartmouth Atlas Project documents glaring variations in how medical resources are distributed and used in the United States.
PeriStats
PeriStats is the online source for perinatal statistics developed by the March of Dimes Perinatal Data Center and provides free access to maternal and infant health-related data at the US, state, county, and city level.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA's Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality (CBHSQ) is the lead federal government agency for behavioral health data and research. CBHSQ maintains several data collection systems and surveys on key topics in U.S. behavioral health.
Youth Behavioral Risk Surveillance System (YBRSS)
The YRBSS monitors health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults as well as prevalence of obesity and asthma.
Reference Resources
These resources provide you the key concepts related to a variety of health topics and can include clinical aspects, treatment, control and prevention, related primary literature, and additional reading. Some examples of the information contained in each database include, Infectious diseases and epidemiology, virology, nutrition, and many other health-related topics.
- AccessScience This link opens in a new windowAccessScience is an online resource that contains material covering all major scientific disciplines, including links to primary research material, videos, animations, and curriculum maps for teachers. The McGraw Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms is also integrated into the search function.
- Health Reference Center This link opens in a new windowHealth Reference Center includes comprehensive, in-depth coverage of body systems, current health issues, major diseases and conditions, treatments, and procedures, as well as health and nutrition information specific to men, women, children, teens, and seniors.
