Professional Identity
This image shows the four domains of professional identity in nursing as defined by the International Society for Professional Nursing Identity including value and ethics, knowledge, nurse as leader, and professional comportment.
- Fostering professional identity in nursing This link opens in a new windowAll nurses should learn about professional identity in nursing and then model and apply it to their practice settings.
Fostering professional identity in nursing can improve nurse well-being, work retention and job satisfaction, and promote safe quality patient care.
Through their mission, values, and programs, healthcare systems and practice settings should stive to provide a workplace culture and environment that supports professional identity in nursing.
Nursing Advocacy
- Nursing Advocacy This link opens in a new windowThe nursing literature is saturated with research supporting an advocacy framework for the patient and family. However, little evidence exists to support a framework for nursing self-advocacy. The overall well-being of the bedside clinician can have a direct effect on the quality and safety of patient care. Thus, there is a need to develop an evidence-based practice framework to support self-advocacy research in the nursing profession.

The Sessler Branden Advocacy Theory (SBAT), bridged the existing knowledge with a pragmatic theory that can be applied and utilized by any nurse in any situation where advocacy is needed, it is visualized in the image. Conditional Context leads to the nurse’s Decision to Advocate or not and leads to the five Components within the large triangle. These form the main actions of the core phenomenon = To Advocate. The Levels of the SBAT Matrix in which the advocacy action occurs are seen in the concentric arcs above the advocacy triangle. The complexity of the nurse advocate role is shown through the interrelationships of the components, with each action being tied to the other actions. The diagram features circles, rectangles, arrows, lines, and text to represent the information
